World Malaria Day
The word "mosquito" is Spanish for "little fly"

DUBAI, U.A.E., 29 April 2019: Mosquitoes are a group of about 3500 species of small insects that are a type of fly. Within that order they constitute the family Culicidae. Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is preventable and curable. Early diagnosis and treatment of malaria reduces disease and prevents deaths. It also contributes to reducing malaria transmission. April is considered to be the International World Malaria Month and World Health Organization celebrates World Malaria Day each year on the 25th April.

Emirates Group Security (EGS) invited personnel from Dubai’s Ministry of Health (MOH) to raise awareness of Malaria Disease to the EGS, Transguard and Transguard Group LLC (TG) staff on the 29th April 2019, which was conducted at the Emirates Group Security Headquarters from 1000hrs. The MOH personnel gave a presentation about malarial and the transmission of malaria from the female Anopheles mosquitoes. Staff were highly urged to take antimalarial medicine at least 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after traveling to countries with a high burden of malaria particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, to prevent malaria.

Some of the preventive measures that the staff were recommended to do once they are in a country known to be at high risk of malaria include:-

  1. Sleeping under an insecticide-treated net.
  2. Indoor spraying with residual insecticides.
  3. Closing of windows and doors to prevent mosquitos from getting into the room(s).
  4. Seeking immediate medical attention at a parasite-based diagnostic testing once they develop a malaria symptom

The Ministry of Health personnel engaged the staff in a question and answer session after their presentation, and later gave give-aways to the staff. The session ended at 1100hrs.
